L/Cpl Mande served onboard Long Beach 1979 - 1981. Bill had served in the U.S. Army prior to his service in the Marines and served in the U.S. Navy afterwards. Among his other duties he served also as MarDet's volunteer barber. He was an admin in our MarDetCGN9 fb group as well. Bill is survived by children, mother, sister and uncles.

SGT MJR.  Age 68
Live Oak, FL

Sgt. Major Griggs served onboard Long Beach 1977 - 1981 as a First Sgt. Thomas served more than 28 years in the Marine Corps. He served 3 tours of combat duty in Vietnam and was part of the team who made the first combat parachute jump in Marine Corps history. Wounded at the Battle of Hue, Tet Offensive, 1968. His combat decorations include 2 Bronze Stars, 3 Purple Hearts and 2 Navy Commendation Medals with Combat "V". He received over 95 non-combat awards for meritorious service as well. No marriage.

    Jerry served onboard Long Beach from 1978 to 1980 from and was active duty 1977 to 1981  He is survived by his wife, 2 sons, 1 stepson, 1 stepdaughter, 8 grandchildren, 4 brothers and 6 sisters. The following is his last Facebook post.

    "I never thought I would live past 30 here I am 60. I thank God for all I have seen and the family and friends I have. But I wish I would have treated myself better while I was young because the getting old ain't for the weak."

    Bullhead City, AZ

    Bill served our country as a Sergeant in the United States Marine Corps. Onboard USS Long Beach CGN-9 from 1978-1980. He retired from the United States Postal Service in 2016 after more than a combined total of 40 years in military/civil service.
